Networking

We discussed in class the importance of developing career networks. Networks are important for developing identify, developing contacts for information, advice, and moral support as you pursue your goals. Kellly Pederson, a Career Specialist, at Rider University states that 75-80% of jobs are found through networks. And, a referral generates 80% more results than a cold call. We discussed that an important part of the networking process is developing a 30 seconds to one minute commercial of yourself. The commercial should contain your background information, current/prior roles in your responsibilities, education and knowledge, strengths and areas of interest and goals. Please post two parts to this blog. First, post your ideas for places that you can reach out to develop these network contacts (religious affliations, friends, prior work situations, etc.) Second part of the post should include your commerical script. Bring a hard copy of your commerical to class too.

  1. Networking Opportunities:

Bridget Holmes, the youth minister at my church and the leader of my high school youth group, has a lot of connections with both religious and community organizations. She is a very good contact to have as she knows a lot of people at different nonprofit and volunteer organizations.

Devon Ruane, my older cousin, is a humanitarian and has worked for numerous nonprofit organizations all over the world. She is an excellent contact to have if I want to find a position at a nonprofit or volunteer organization either in the United States or in Europe. She is also an excellent contact to have if I decide I want to join the Peace Corps or go the humanitarian route after graduation as many of her friends and colleges have been a part of both the Peace Corps and similar organizations.

James Dolan and Karen Lafferty, my best friend’s father and stepmother, are a commercial real estate broker and a commercial real estate lawyer. Mr. Dolan has a lot of business connections with former clients such as Loewe’s Theaters, McDonald’s and other franchises. He is a very good contact to have if I am looking for an internship or to get my foot in the door at a large corporation. Karen is a commercial real estate lawyer and also has a lot of business connections, but she also has a lot of connections at the law firms and companies she has worked at over the years. She is a very valuable contact to keep in case I decide that law school is the route I want to take after graduation.

Susan Keefer, my father’s best friend’s wife, is an editor and website coordinator for The Wall Street Journal. She has worked at a lot of different papers in the area from small local papers to big papers such as The New York Times. She is a good contact to keep if I want to try to get my foot in the door in the journalism/PR world.

Deborah Cantillo, my former employer, owns her own business and has a lot of business relationships and connections with clothing and advertising companies in New York City. I worked for Deb in high school at her clothing boutique and we maintain a good relationship. She has a lot of business relationships with her suppliers and she is an excellent contact to have if I want to try to get an internship or a job in the human relations/PR departments of any of the fashion or advertising companies that she works with.

    Commercial Script:

My name is Sarah Ruane and I am a sophomore Communication Studies major at The College of New Jersey. I am on the Interpersonal/Organizational Communication Studies track and I also have a minor in English. I am a member of Phi Sigma Sigma Fraternity, Inc. which has given me the opportunity to organize and plan such events at luncheons, formals and community service events. I also participate in numerous volunteer and philanthropic events with my sorority. I am very interested in philanthropic work and hope to use the communication, organization and planning skills that I have acquired through college and my experiences with my sorority, as well as my strong writing skills, to obtain a position at a nonprofit organization or a company in which I can spread awareness and help to make the world a better place.

  2. Networks:

The closer I come to graduating from college, the more I see first hand the importance of networking. Especially in the current economic climate, where tons of qualified people are applying for the same few jobs, knowing people in the right places can really make the difference between getting overlooked and securing the position.

One of my greatest contacts is actually my mother! She is a Human Resources consultant for IBM, so she is in contact with influential people in my field of interest every day. Because she has been working in HR for so long, she has one of the largest networks of anyone I know, ranging from old college friends to recent college grads she has hired. In addition, because she is my mom (and is just the weensiest bit biased), she will work tirelessly on my behalf to help me succeed in any way she can.

Another great resource for me is the TCNJ Ambassador Program. As an Ambassador, I am basically serving as a public relations consultant or salesperson for the college, and the 100 other Ambassadors that I work with have seen what I can do first hand. This puts them in a good position to be able to talk about my skills and strengths when referring me to others. These students are coming from all different grade levels and areas of study on campus, which gives me a very varied and diversified network of contacts when I graduate.

In terms of applying to graduate schools, my psychology advisor is absolutely my strongest point person. While completing his PhD, he worked closely with a number of professors in the Industrial/Organizational field on different research projects. He is not only a great resource in terms of the amount of knowledge that he has about the graduate school application process, but he also knows the right people to put me in contact with to get my name out there. He has connections to almost every graduate school I am interested in, having met these professors at SIOP conferences or other research symposiums throughout the years. Because I have impressed him with my work over the last two years, he will gladly refer me to anyone he believes can be of help. Psychology research is an incredibly collaborative process, so having these contacts at my disposal will be invaluable to me.

Since my immediate focus upon graduating from TCNJ is to get into an Industrial/Organizational Psychology graduate program, my elevator speech will be directed to an associate professor or admissions counselor of a graduate institution.

    Elevator Speech:

Hello, Dr. Psychology, I’m so glad I ran into you! My name is Allie Reiter and I am a junior I/O Psychology major and Communications minor at TCNJ. I have been researching I/O graduate programs for the past year, and I believe that The Amazing Psychology Program would be an excellent fit for me. In the past, I have worked tirelessly to maintain grades that meet and exceed the requirements for the Dean’s List and Psi Chi National Honors Society. I continue to strive for excellence while currently focusing on research experiences, working with my advisor to execute his research and create my own independent projects. I believe my intense focus on academics and my research credentials have prepared me for my future goal of attending this top graduate institution. Thank you so much for your time, Dr. Psychology, and I look forward to speaking with you soon.

  3. Networking

The main reason I took classes at TCNJ this semester was to reconnect with my major (Biology) since I graduated many moons ago and never worked in the field. I thought I could update my skill level and therefore expand my repertoire and acquire a position in the science field since I have worked the majority of my career in Financial Accounting and Human Resources.
I thought I would make contacts here at school; however, the problem with science is that there have been so many new discoveries and methodologies in the last six to seven years that it is very hard to take one semester of four classes to get updated. Technology has inundated this filed, and procedures along with findings have replaced many theories of later day. I know, as I already have spoken with faculty here and since they are forever involved in this field, they are first hand resources.
With this information, I have decided to change careers and pursue speech pathology, however, this too, is not a major offered at TCNJ.
My language development professor has offered to introduce me to the department chairperson of the speech and language department so I may get first hand information in regards to additional schooling, graduate degree and best available universities in the area that offer such a program. My elevator speech will be focused on this conversation. I hope to not only get valuable information from him, but also to receive additional contacts he may be willing to offer. My previous past employment experiences would not support my future endeavors as I have never worked in the education field.

    Elevator Speech

Hi Dr. Speech, I was referred to you by Dr. Pancsofar in hopes you may be able to provide me with some much needed guidance on pursuing a graduate degree in speech pathology. I have a BS degree in Biology, although I have spent my post graduate years working in the financial accounting and human resources areas. I am very interested in pursuing a career change to speech pathology and working with children. The school curriculums are so vast and intervention is early, that I feel this is an excellent opportunity to help a child learn and develop their speech. I have many years in the management and guidance of employees that I feel I can bring a great deal of resources needed for the patience and training of these children. One of the greatest feelings I could hope for is alleviating a child’s frustration, by assisting in their need to articulate so their learning process is accelerated. My other positions have been jobs but this I feel is a career and I would like to pursue it. I value your input and whatever guidance you will be able to offer me.

  4. There are many places to develop professional contacts and networks. I think our school is a great one to start at. Professors are great resource and they usually know many industry professionals and have many contacts. Throughout the past couple of years, I have networked very much with professors and that has resulted in job opportunities and a couple of interviews as well.

I think anywhere you go can be an opportunity for networking. You just never know who you're going to run into. It can be at the supermarket, at the mall, at school, or even a neighbor. Many people have professional contacts and you just never know when you will run into the right person.

Also, on campus events can be great places to network. Professional speakers, club events, career fairs, etc, are all great places to network, get your name out there, and even find jobs.

    Here is my dialogue:

Andy Garcia: Hello Mr. Jones. My name is Andy Garcia and I recently applied for an open Account Coordinator position at your company. I was referred to you by Ms. Jones to discuss the position and what type of candidate you were looking to hire. Did you have some time to speak with me about that?

Mr. Jones: Sure Andy! Thanks for coming by to speak with me. What exactly would you like to discuss?

AG: Well Mr. Jones, I just wanted to tell you a little bit about myself and my qualifications. I am a recent graduate of The College of New Jersey where I majored in Communication Studies and minored in Marketing. I feel that I have a lot of great qualities and skills that I will be able to apply to this position. I am very motivated and enthusiastic to achieve success and help to benefit your company and its colleagues as well. I am very knowledgeable as to what goes into being an Account Coordinator and I have the right qualities to succeed in that role. I am prompt, proactive and pay close attention to details as well. These are all crucial qualities in my opinion to succeed in this position. I think that if you offered me the opportunity to work for your company, you will notice firsthand my intense drive to succeed personally and professionally as well as advancing company goals.

MJ: Andy, I appreciate your enthusiasm and I will be reviewing your application very shortly. I will be in contact with you very soon. Thank you.

AG: Thank you for your time and consideration Mr. Jones. I look forward to hearing back from you. Have a great day!

  5. My best networking connection is definitely my current boss. She has owned a bar in Ewing for many, many years and throughout those years she has met people from every different walk of life and in every career path. She is never reluctant to help myself or another one of her employees reach out to one of her past customers for a networking opportunity. I have also found that my parents are a great source for networking. Over the past summer, one of my Mom's friends was able to assist my sister in getting an internship just because she had been impressed with her when they met. Also, my figure skating coach, Donna, is an excellent networking contact to have. She has been able to assist me with getting coaching jobs at different rinks by introducing me to contacts she has established. I think the main thing that this assignment is helping me realize is that every person you meet could be a potential networking opportunity. You can never be sure who you are talking to right away and a current stranger could wind up to be your future employer.

Hello Mr. Lawyer, it's so nice to finally meet you! I have heard such good things about your firm from Sue! If you wouldn't mind, I'd like to tell you a little bit about myself. I am currently a sophomore at The College of New Jersey majoring in Communication Studies and minoring in Law, Politics, and Philosophy. I plan on going to law school in the future and am actively seeking an internship in the field. Presently, I am serving on the Executive Board of my sorority as Standards/Risk Management Chair. I also currently hold an off-campus job as a bartender where I have gained countless hours experience interacting with people. Since the beginning of my collegiate career I have worked hard to maintain a high academic GPA and pride myself on my ability to manage time effectively. I am responsible, hard-working, and most importantly passionate about every task I undertake. I have a vested interest in the law and am very passionate about the profession I have chosen. I would greatly appreciate the chance to intern at Lawyer&Lawyer as I believe I have the right skill set to greatly benefit your firm. I appreciate you taking the time to listen and thank you very much!

  7. As I am from a very different culture, I find it quite hard to engage in a conversation with a complete stranger. It is just not that common for Germans to just start talking to a stranger. I do understand that it is important and I need to learn how to approach people that could be beneficial to me in the future: it does take a lot for me though to get over myself and initiate a conversation. With the following people I have encountered, I could practice my networking skills:
1.) Melissa, a project manager I worked with last summer in a London branch of Deutsche Bank. Working with her for a few weeks made me realize how many people she knows and how much information transfer is going on “at the water cooler”. She supervises many different projects; hence, she knows a lot of different people.
2.) I agree with the students who have posted this before: taking advantage of the professor’s knowledge is an opportunity nobody should miss. My psychology professor knows a lot about graduate programs and consultant companies that I am interested in. He can help me with a different point of view that I might not have from the psych professors in Germany. My Chinese professor has already offered me to talk to his friends and family in case I want to study abroad in China.
3.) My friend Julia is 3 years older than me and works as a production manager for an important TV station in Germany. Given the fact that I grew up with her, I know she would be willing and motivated to help me out in meeting important people. The show she manages has many famous guests such as politicians and managers and I know the contacts I could make would be priceless.
Elevator Speech (in the highly unlikely event that I run into Ian Davis, CEO of McKinsey & Company)
    Good morning Mr. Davis,
I am so excited to finally meet you, I have read many of your articles. You must know, I am very interested in your company and the set of values you have established for it. I researched them during my year abroad in the States at The College of New Jersey. I just got back to Europe this month and I’m looking forward to graduation from Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt this coming summer. My major is American Studies and I minor in Business and Psychology. As a matter of fact, I am currently looking for internship opportunities to help me develop leadership skills. Do you happen to know someone I could talk to about that?

  8. I am a firm believer that connections are everything. I really believe that regardless of the degree you hold, when it comes down to it, what matters is who you know. Luckily, I live 15 minutres from nyc, where I think is one of the best places to make connections. Whether you are at a bar, restaurant, club, or simply on the streets, there are endless connections to be made.
I currently work at the TCNJ bookstore where I think is a great place to meet not only other students who are seeking the same job opportunities but there are also a ton of parents who come in who could be potential employers.
I also work at Franciscan Oaks in Denville, NJ. Franciscan Oaks is a retirement home for the older wealthier group of people. It is a facility with dining rooms, hair salons, gyms, swimming pools, and basically anything else you need from the outside world. I work in the dining room which is filled with retired doctors, lawyers, and anything else you can think of. It is a really friendly environment where I have gotten the opportunity to meet an abundance of people.
TCNJ also offers career fairs which I think is a great opportunity to make connections.

    COMMERCIAL:
    Me: Dr. Dovone?
    Dr: Yes?
Me: Hi, I've heard so much about you from your current intern, Lauren. She loves the job and speaks so highly of you.
Dr: Thank you, that's nice to hear.
Me: My name is Angela Pineiro and I'm actually majoring in Communications and Marketing at The College of New Jersey. I am the spirit and sisterhood chair of my pledge class in the sorority, Zeta Tau Alpha. I am also currently working in sales at the campus bookstore. I am excellent with organizing and time management skills and I'm seeking an opportunity to be able to apply these skills and help the performance of an Adverising and Public Relations firm.
Dr: Wow, I'm really impressed Angela, you sound very qualified.
Me: Thank you, here are a couple of my business cards, if you are ever looking for an intern or know someone who is, please give me a call.
Dr: Thank you Angela, I certainly will.
Me: Thank you, have a great day and it was a pleasure to finally meet you.

  10. Having previously mentioned in class, I plan on attending law school next semester and therefore networking skills will prove invaluable as I attempt to make headway in the corporate law field. I found in terms of previous endeavors that on many occasions the old saying of it’s ‘who you know rather than what you know’ to be a key component in many forms of advancement. This is not to say that you do not need to be a good worker or have a strong work ethic nor am I saying that one can not advance without knowing someone; but its surly easier and faster when the opportunity for advancement is at the hands of someone you know. Accordingly, I think I’ll mostly focus on building a strong network of business acquaintances from my peers in law school. I was often told that in law school you made a strong group of friends and moreover create a wide network of individuals whose skill set proves helpful in future happenings. Moreover, I think my professor in law school would be especially helpful in terms of networking because each, prior to becoming a faculty, have created their own professional networks.

Hello Mr. Law Firm Partner, I understand that you work at Law Firm Inc. and I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is German Rozencranc and I am going to become a 1L student and have been researching prevalent corporate law firms in the New York area. I found that your firm has vested a tremendous amount of resources towards making your corporate transaction division a powerhouse in corporate America today. My focus in law school is going to be in transaction and corporate litigation and I was hoping you might give me the opportunity to better acquaint myself with the field of corporate law within your firms. I am confident that it will be an invaluable experience and my passion for the field and willingness to learn will of an asset to your corporation in whatever capacity you would need me. My experience at The College of New Jersey and studies in History and Political Science has ensured that my writing, research, and communication skills would be of an appropriate caliber to work for you. Additionally, I must reiterate the sincere passion and interest I have for the field. Perhaps we could discuss some externship possibilities?

  11. Networking is one of the most powerful tools in the business world. Not only does it allow you to stay connected with prominent individuals, but may even help you to land a job. When you meet an individual that has accomplished a lot in his or her profession, it is a wise idea to get a business card and stay connected. Staying connected means dropping by to say hello, checking on the status of an application, or showing how passionate you are about a job by asking questions. Even if they might not be in the position to give you a job, they can possibly direct you into the right direction towards one of their connections who can, and will hopefully put in a good word for you. So seize the opportunity, make a strong network and stay connected!

Some of my network contacts are:
My dream job is to work for L’Oreal Paris as a Marketing Manager, and one day hopefully become CEO of my own company. One of my strongest contacts for L’Oreal Paris is a Human Resource Manger for Feria Haircolor. Ms. Miller, gradate from TCNJ, is constantly on campus giving presentations and speaking at different business classes. I actually meet Ms. Miller last year, when I attended on of my friends Professional Selling Classes. I had saw on the TCNJ calendar that L’Oreal Paris was given a presentation, and I couldn’t let that chance slip away. I attended the presentation and was totally amazed. I did plenty of research on L’Oreal Paris, being that is my dream job I want to work for, and I totally impressed Ms. Miller with that. I asked plenty of questions and really showed how passionate I am about a future with L’Oreal Paris. She gave me her business card, and told me to stay in connect. And I definitely did. I e-mailed Ms. Miller numerous times about her career journey with L’Oreal, internship possibilities and for advice on my course program planner.

Another strong network connection I have is the State Chairman of New Jersey Future Business Leaders of America. In my senior year of high school I served as New Jersey FBLA Southern-Region Vice President. Not only does the Chairman know all of my strengths as a professional, but knows me personally being that I along with the 8 other state officer spend a lot of time with her. That included National Leadership Conferences, and State Officer Training Retreats. Being that FBLA is a National Business Organization, she has numerous connections with some of the most powerful people in the business field.

    Commercial Script
Scenario: At work in the Office of Admissions and a woman comes in who I notice is carrying a briefcase that says L’Oreal

    Attention Getter
Kenya: Hello, Welcome to the College of New Jersey Admissions Office. My name is Kenya. How may I help you?

Stephanie: Hello, My name is Jane Monroe, and I have an 11:00 appointment with the Dean of Admissions. And I can see I’m about 20 minutes early (laugh)

Kenya: (Laugh) yes, you are. But you know its better to me early than late so, take a load off and relax. The Dean is actually in another interview right now, but she should be done in a few. Oooh I love your briefcase, and it says L’Oreal, correct?

Stephanie: Yes it does. I’m a Human Resource Manager for L’Oreal’s Luxury Product line of Lancôme.

    Purpose/Point
Kenya: Very impressive! I actually just applied to the L’Oreal’s Internship Program for L’Oreal Paris USA located in NY. I have my interview in two weeks with Daniel Esquire. He’s the Senior Vice President of Human Resources.

Stephanie: Yes, I know Daniel very well. We both attended Princeton University together.

    Reason
Kenya: Wow small world. My Dream is to work for L’Oreal Paris.

Stephanie: Really, and why is that a dream of ours?

    Example
Kenya: Well, not only do I love all of L’Oreal Products, but I also love the company’s philanthropy. I know recently you just was rewarded your 26th Oscar in recognition of the company’s outstanding, sustainable involvement to society. And you certainly deserved it. Giving back to the community with your scholarship programs, and Give a Smile Foundation means so much. Also, the fact you give some proceeds to the Susan G. Komen Foundation is very heart-touching. Breast cancer is something that very dear to me.

Stephanie: Wow, I see you did your research.

    Point
Kenya: Ms. Monroe, I know I have what it takes to work for L’Oreal Paris. Not only do I have a strong business background, but I also have a lot of Leadership experience. I am currently a facilitator in the Leadership Development Program here at TCNJ, and I am very active in Future Business Leaders of America, having served a state position during high school. I am very goal-oriented, intelligent and all around excellent candidate.

Stephanie: And I would agree. Kenya, take my business card, and please keep in contact. I like you, and I’ll be sure to put in a good word for you with Daniel. (Smile)

Kenya: I will, Thank you so much! (Shakes Hand and Smile). And I believe the Dean of Admissions is free now. Please follow me.

  12. Because I want to go into the magazine/fashion industry once I graduate, I understand just how important networking is in landing the perfect job. Because positions in these fields are so competitive and cutthroat, it can often be difficult just to get a foot in the door. However, I have a few people I can reach out to who can help me along the way.

I recently went on a tour of Teen Vogue and met the Features Director who happens to be an alumna of TCNJ. I sent her my resume and she referred me to various different departments I am interested in. This is a great opportunity for me because it gives me much better access to the company. Also, when you have a personal reference within a company, you can receive much more consideration than if you know nobody.

Maureen, my boss at Calvin Klein in Tinton Falls, could work as a great networking source for me. As the head manager, she has connections to all the executors of the company and could use her contacts to help find me an internship.

Hello Mr. Advertising Director, I am so glad to meet you! I'd like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Corinne Barone and I am a Communication Studies and Spanish double major at The College of New Jersey. I am currently looking for an internship in Advertising or PR, and it would be honored to find one at your magazine. I have developed leadership skills as the treasurer and publicist of the Bod Squad at my college, as well as anchor/reporter for the campus news show. I am also a member of both New York Women in Communications and my college’s chapter of Ed2010, a national network for aspiring magazine editors- both of which have taught me all about the magazine industry. I am an extremely devoted and organized worker, and pride myself in working well under pressure. I believe my strong passion for travel and ability to speak both Italian and Spanish would be great assets in landing a position at your magazine. I will send you a copy of resume. Again, it was such an honor to meet you and I hope to hear from you soon!

  13. The saying goes "its not what you know but who you know." This is very true. Networking is such an important part of any job. It helps people find jobs and keep them. Being a political science major, my ideal job is to eventually be involved in politics and the law.

I think that my best place for networking is at my internship in the Governor's office. I have made many contacts their that I know will help me in the future. I met people from every different branch of government and involved in all different specialties.
Another place where I think networking can help me is through my advisor. Since I want to go to law school, I believe that he can help me find former students to help me along my career path.
A third place that I think is good for networking is my temple. There are people that attend my temple that have many different backgrounds, including those in the law field.

    SCRIPT:
Jessica: Hi, I see that you are a partner at this law firm. I am Jessica Berg; I am so glad I ran into you, I have been trying to reach you about a summer job in this law firm
    Partner: Why are you qualified?
Jessica: Well I am a political science major at TCNJ so I know a lot about government. In high school I worked at another law firm. Also, I have been interning in the policy office in the office of the Governor all semester, and last semester I spent interning in parliament in London
Partner: What will you bring by working here?
Jessica: I know a lot about law and plan on implementing that knowledge in any way that I can. I have been following some of the cases you have been working on and I think I can help with some strategies or give new perspectives. I am very hard working and can help with any cases or projects necessary.
Partner: Why do you want to work here?
Jessica: My future plan is to go to law school and eventually become a lawyer, so I feel that this job would be a great experience for me to have. Your firm has so much to offer and I would love opportunity to work here. Is there any way that I can follow up with this conversation.
Partner: Sure, here is my card. Keep in touch.

  14. Sal Vumbaca: One of my best friends since I was 18, has always helped guide me with career. Works in sales for a chemical company, has a degree in communications with a concentration of public relations from Montclair University. Sal has various contacts for jobs through his family, and his work.

General Nutrition Center: This is where I worked for 5 years, in all areas possible of work. I worked as a sales associate, assistant manager, manager, senior store manager, I've done it all. I would love to use this as a reference in which I work into pharmacutical sales. I know this is very important because it shows that I can do something if I put my mind to it, have sales experience, have managerial experience, and experience with various nutritional supplements.

Script: I walk into a doctors office. Two pharmacuitical sales representatives are talking to a doctor. They succeed in getting the doctor to sign with their product, and use it. I am amazed at the skills that they possess, and I ask for a job.
Me: Nice job out there. You could have sold me on that too, haha.
Prep: Why thank you, we have been doing this a long time.
Me: I can tell, listen, do you have any time? I'm actually looking to get a job in pharmacutical sales.
Prep: Well I don't have much time, but give me a quick rundown of your stats.
Me: Well, my name is David Bosak. I just graduated at TCNJ, majored in communications with a concentration in public relations. I have tons of sales experience. I managed several GNC's at once, training to be a regional sales director. I acted, and have been on commercials. I know how to talk to people, as indicative of my experience in sales. I would be very valuable- I realize that in this world, you have to be aggresive, and that is the way that I am. I know that the person that is successful at life is the one that may fail ten times as much. I'm not afraid to fail. I believe that I could be a great asset to your company. Do you have a business card?
Prep: Not bad. I do. ( gives me card) We will be in touch- my name is Michael Stafford. I will put in a good word, give us a call, we actually are hiring.
Me: Thank you so much, Michael, nice meeting you!

  15. It’s a small world after all! Yes, developing networks in our small world can happen very easily. Networking can happen in the classroom with a classmate, TCNJ faculty, and family members. Networking can happen at a restaurant, a shoe store, or when visiting the doctor’s office. I have personally developed my networks through The College of New Jersey. Professors here at The College of New Jersey are very skilled in what they do. They have many contacts and are able to let students be put in contact with their networks. I actually volunteered with a non-profit organization for a semester long research project, because of my professor’s network. Also, immediate and extended family members have given me great feedback and advice as to how to network with others. My immediate family members I have been able allow me to acquire summer employment for the last few years. Developmental programs I have participated in are great ways for networking. The programs are filled with networks it is how they maintain their status. I have met tons of people through the development programs such as, Proyecto Access and the AllStarts Project Inc. 16. I believe that I will be able to utilize this 30 second commercial a lot. When I go to functions with my parents I am constantly networking with the people there. Everyday you meet new people and that is a constant opportunity to network and really showcase yourself. You really never know who you will meet and when you need to use the 30 second commercial so having it readily available is a plus. When you go into the city even just walking through buildings you can meet people that you can network with.

Scenario: I just graduated from The College of New Jersey and am looking for a job at Vogue magazine. I applied two months ago and did not get called in for as much as an interview. I am in the elevator with the Editor-In-Chief of the magazine and would love to get an interview with them.

Erika: Good afternoon, Ms. Mirabella, I just read Vogue’s latest article about Marc Jacobs and thought the piece was fabulously done, it was so great of you to allow a new writer like Kaitlyn Dash do such a high profile piece.

Ms. Mirabella: Thank you! Kaitlyn graduated from Villanova last spring and I was so impressed with her journalistic skills I gave her this assignment.

Erika: That is great that you allow new journalists to have such great experiences! That is funny that you feel that way because, my name is Erika Rieth and I just graduated from The College of New Jersey in May with a bachelors degree in Journalism and Communications and I am really interested in writing for your magazine.

Ms. Mirabella: Really? What makes you qualified to write for Vogue?

Erika: Well, I wrote for my college newspaper on a regular basis, was a part of Unbound, my school’s magazine as well as being an active member of the school’s television station. I maintained a 3.6 grade point average and took rigorous and challenging classes. I am an extremely outgoing person and I am always up for a challenge.
Ms. Mirabella: Wow, that sounds very impressive!

Erika: Would there be any way that I could reach you to set up an appointment to speak with you more about writing for Vogue?

Ms. Mirabella: Absolutely, here is my card, call my assistant and she can set something up for you to come in next week.

Erika: Thank you so much for your time and I am looking forward to speaking with you next week!

  17. My cousin, David, has worked with Marriott for the past ten years. He has held many positions for the hotel but his main position is event manager. He was the main event manager at the Marriott Marquis in New York City, one of the most popular hotels in the city. He was in charge of running everything from a small business event to a Brittany Spears concert. He has worked with many people and currently he works at a hotel just outside the city. He loves working there and he tells me all about the positions. When I expressed interest in working for Marriott, he was more than willing to help me out. He said he would definitely be able to set me up with an internship either this winter or next summer and he could most likely guarantee me a position when I got out of college. I would start low but hopefully work my way up to where he is today. I talk to him now and then just to make sure that we are still on track. I am excited to start my career once I graduate.

30 Second Commercial: Hi we haven’t’ met yet I’m Vicky Koziol. I just applied for the position as Hotel Sales Manager here at the Marriot. It’s a pleasure to meet you. I am extremely excited to have the opportunity to apply for this position as manager. I really think that I could be a strong asset to the management team here at your hotel. I’ve studied communications at The College of New Jersey for the past four years where I also earned a minor in management. Throughout those four years I developed very strong interpersonal skills that allow me to form strong connections with the individuals around me. I was also able to develop effective management skills that help me manage groups of people extremely efficiently.

Question: This hotel has brought in the highest sales out of all other hotels in the area. Sales manager is a big responsibility. Are you sure you would be able to handle the pressures?

I absolutely can handle the pressures that are associated with this position. The past two summers I have interned with Marriott hotels and I loved the pressure. I’ve even been thinking of new ideas that could possibly benefit the sales department here at the hotel. Hopefully I can earn this position, as I said I think I could really be a strong asset to this company. It was very nice to meet you.
